Obeah, also spelled Obiya or Obia, is a broad term for African diasporic religious, spell-casting, and healing traditions found primarily in the former British colonies of the Caribbean. These practices derive much from West African traditions but also incorporate elements of European and South Asian origin. Obeah is a religious practice based on a combination of multiple religions—a creolization of religions, so to speak. It draws on elements of African religion and also reinterprets and “Africanizes” Christian practices. For hundreds of years, the practice of Obeah, a Jamaican variant of Voodoo, has been outlawed, but now campaigners believe they have a chance to change the law, reports the BBC’s Nick Davis in … Obeah is still illegal in Jamaica today, even though several other Caribbean countries, including Barbados and Trinidad & Tobago, have rewritten their law to decriminalize it. In conjunction with this special issue of Atlantic Studies, the Early Caribbean Digital Archive (ECDA) – developed at Northeastern University and available at ecdaproject.org – has created a collaborative archival project, “Obeah and the Caribbean.” “Obeah” refers to a set of practices employed by Africans for ends that enslaved peoples perceived as socially useful, from healing and revenge, to protection and rebellion. Obeah, as noted above, is a term that applies to a panoply of beliefs and practices in the Anglophone Caribbean. 11 Etymological studies suggest it originated from West African (speci cally Akan or Ibibio) terms meaning “wizard” 12 or “herbalist;” 13 however, British authorities in the This article reconsiders the archive of colonial literatures about obeah, an Afro-Caribbean religious and medical practice that enslaved Africans employed for a variety of purposes, including healing, discovering deceit, and poisoning people, and that colonists associated with insurrection after Tacky’s Rebellion in 1760. Obeah was part of a feared shadow world of African spiritual practice, illegal and thus almost invisible. Diana Paton’s achievement in this masterful experiment in social and cultural history is to map its meanings for Caribbean society from the era of slavery to the postcolonial moment.
