Jack of Jack and the Beanstalk is the protagonist of the comic book Jack of Fables, a spin-off of Fables, which also features other elements from the story, such as giant beanstalks and giants living in the clouds. Jack and the Beanstalk first appeared as The Story of Jack Spriggins and the Enchanted Bean in 1734. Featured iIllustrations are by Arthur Rackham, 1918 edition of English Fairy Tales retold by Flora Annie Steel. Watch and find out! Jack and the Beanstalk is an old British fairy tale with roots that date back over 5,000 years . It’s an archetypal story about a boy who steals treasure from a giant. It’s also the story of a tower so tall it reaches heaven (similar to the tower of Babel, Jacob’s Ladder, and Yggdrasil). When the two giants left the room, Jack stole the five gold coins and slipped them into his bag. “This is all I need!” thought Jack. But then Jack remembered that his family no longer had a cow. Without a cow, they would surely starve. He decided to stay and look for other treasures. Jack makes three trips up the beanstalk, each time stealing from the man-eating giant who lives in the sky. After Jack steals a singing harp on his third adventure, he slags the giant by chopping down the beanstalk while the giant is chasing him down to the earth from his kingdom in the clouds. Jack exchanges the family cow for five beans. His mother is furious and throws them out of the window. The beans sprout into a stalk and jack climbs up to the sky and the land of giants. The next morning when Jack opened the curtains, he saw something very strange. In the same place where his mother had thrown the beans, there was a giant, green beanstalk. It stretched from the ground, up, up, up… all the way to the clouds.
