Grass: A Nation’s Battle for Life is a 1925 documentary film [1] that follows a branch of the Bakhtiari tribe of Lurs in Persia as they and their herds make their seasonal journey to better pastures. It is considered one of the earliest ethnographic documentary films. Dating to 1925, this silent film Grass: A Nation’s Battle for Life is one of the earliest ethnographic documentary films ever made. This version runs 57… With Merian C. Cooper, Ernest B. Schoedsack, Marguerite Harrison, Haidar Khan. The struggles of a hardscrabble Iranian nomadic tribe as they journey through bleak country to reach the grasslands that will save their livestock. Georges Sadoul. I due registi e la moglie d’uno dei due accompagnarono in Iran, nelle annuali transumanze, le tribù nomadi Baktiari e le loro greggi, alla ricerca d’erba fresca ora sui monti e ora nelle pianure. This moving documentary by Merian C. Cooper follows the journey of the Bakhtiari, an impoverished nomadic tribe in Iran, in their never-ending search for… In 1924, neophyte filmmakers Merian C. Cooper and Ernest B. Schoedsack—later to achieve cinematic immortality as the makers of KING KONG—joined forces with journalist and spy Marguerite Harrison and set off to film an adventure. Venturing through deserts, mountains, rivers and snowy wastelands in search of the life-sustaining grasslands, the Bakhtiari’s 50,000 strong caravan – complete with 500,000 cattle and goats … The real-life struggles of the Bakhtiari tribe of Southern Persia (Iran) to migrate with 50,000 people and ten times as much livestock over seemingly impassable natural barriers of mountain and river during harsh weather conditions to reach grazing lands for their cattle and other livestock. In a rare nod to geopolitical intrigue, the closing reference to the murder of Robert Imbrie in Tehran is an inadvertent portent of Reza Khan’s seizure of power later that year, marking the dawn of the Pahlavi Dynasty. Yet Cooper and Schoedsack’s evocation of a mythic past remains wholly disinterested in the nation’s future.
