Venturing through deserts, mountains, rivers and snowy wastelands in search of the life-sustaining grasslands, the Bakhtiari’s 50,000 strong caravan – complete with 500,000 cattle and goats … The real-life struggles of the Bakhtiari tribe of Southern Persia (Iran) to migrate with 50,000 people and ten times as much livestock over seemingly impassable natural barriers of mountain and river during harsh weather conditions to reach grazing lands for their cattle and other livestock. In a rare nod to geopolitical intrigue, the closing reference to the murder of Robert Imbrie in Tehran is an inadvertent portent of Reza Khan’s seizure of power later that year, marking the dawn of the Pahlavi Dynasty. Yet Cooper and Schoedsack’s evocation of a mythic past remains wholly disinterested in the nation’s future.
