Synopsis: Elsa (Shirley MacLaine) ha vissuto gli ultimi sessant’anni della sua vita immaginandosi come Anita Ekberg nella famosa scena della fontana del film La dolce vita di Fellini. Al suo fianco però non c’è nessun Marcello Mastroianni eppure Elsa è convinta che, nonostante l’età, ci sia ancora speranza per l’amore. Fred (Christopher Plummer) è un po’ più giovane di Elsa ed è un buon uomo: ha dedicato tutta la sua esistenza a fare ciò che gli altri si aspettavano da lui ma, dopo la morte della moglie, è turbato e confuso. Dopo che la figlia decide di trovargli un appartamento più piccolo, Fred si ritrova a vivere nello stesso palazzo di Elsa e da quel momento tutto cambia. Elsa irromperà nella sua vita come un fulmine a ciel sereno, insegnandogli che il tempo che resta da vivere è prezioso e va goduto fino in fondo.
