• Synopsis: L’ingegnere di Millwood City Scott Daniels, trasferitosi da Houston, indaga su una serie di misteriosi incendi. L’unico figlio di Scott e Lourie Harper, Jesse, che odiava il trasloco o la casa della giovinezza di papà, finge di avere la febbre e invita la sua nuova ragazza Carmen. La giornalista Allison Saunders, l’ex liceale di Scott, trova Jesse privo di sensi, sopraffatto dai fumi. Le fogne sono piene di topi morti. Le crepe compaiono in vari edifici. Le perdite di gas provocano incendi esplosivi. Il sindaco Walker, che si occupa solo di politica e pubblicità, annulla la richiesta di Scott per un’evacuazione di massa. Scott e l’amico dell’amministrazione cittadina Kenny Barrows scoprono in seguito che la causa è la perforazione a pressione di vapore della società di esplorazione petrolifera di Talbot, ma il capo dei vigili del fuoco Patterson è in combutta con Talbot da anni, copre le loro tracce e mina la credibilità di Scott.
