The fairy tale plot about the old wife and husband without children in new realities. The old woman finds a baby in the cabbage and decides to take him home. She hurries back to her husband to show him the child. But sees him preparing for death.

There is an abandoned little town in the middle of nowhere in Russia - only two lonely old men and recently widowed lady living there. One of the men decides to put an end to his loneliness and offer his hand to the widow. However, the other man is not satisfied with the twist and also offers himself as her companion. They wage war at each other.

The son, along with his mother, comes to visit his grandparents, who can’t stand each other. A quiet trip turns into a living hell when the old people begin to quarrel, remembering past grievances because of which they can’t live in peace and love each other.

In this provocative Soviet drama, an aged couple are left homeless after their farm burns down, and they head off to live with their impoverished daughter. When they arrive, they are appalled to learn that she has abandoned her child and husband to run away with a married man. The husband is now an alcoholic, so the grandparents stay on to support their son-in-law in his time of need and to help care for their grandson. Later, the errant daughter is dumped by her lover and returns. Many fights ensue until the grandfather banishes his troublesome daughter from their lives.
