Three men at three different times in history come to Mow Top hill in search of sanctuary from their troubles. A Roman soldier, a medieval rebel and a 1970s young man. Somehow they seem linked through an energy within the hill and an axe. Is history doomed to repeat itself or can loving another person free them?

This magnus opus is a domestic symphony from a woman's point of view, the portait of a grandmother, monther and child and their home. The women and their personal objects are mostly seen alone or relating to one another (except for touching scenes of the grandmonther and grandfather together). A key aspect of RED SHIFT is the reading of selections from Calamity Jane's "Diaries", the most narrative apsect of the film. The Diaries are read against activities seen through a window, life passing by (people walking in winter, a river flowing). They tell how Jane lost her daughter and had to survive by using her talents to act like a tough and physically competitive man...

All galaxies appear to be moving away from each other. Over large distances, the further an object moves away from any given vantage point, the more the light waves emanating from it are stretched out before they reach it - resulting in lower and lower frequencies as it continues along its course. Within the spectrum of visible light, red light possesses the lowest frequency, meaning the further into the distance an object strays, the redder it appears from our slice of space and time.
