Margaret Hixon's 1981 film documents a real-life wedding in the Old Believer settlements of Marion County, Oregon, in the years 1979 and 1980. The film briefly touches on a wealth of traditional arts (embroidery, clothing construction, weaving, vernacular architecture, folk song and foodways) and beautifully presents a whole series of rituals -- the "devichnik" (engagement party), "selling" the bride and her braid, the wedding feast, the bargaining over the dowry, and the ceremony of bestowing gifts and advice on the newlyweds. This is the story of a Brazilian-Uruguayan family of Old Believers who consider themselves Russian. Alexey Kilin, whose ancestors were once forced to flee from Soviet power to South America, returned to his homeland in the Amur Region and is waiting for his ex-wife Agripina and their son Demyan after 13 years of separation. The attempt at reuniting fails. Nevertheless Agripina decides not to return to Brazil, but to stay in an unfamiliar homeland, in a city with the symbolic name of Svobodny (which means ‘free’ in Russian).

Here in North America, for the first time in their history, they are threatened not by persecution, but by economic bounty and the western notion of personal freedom. Shot over the four seasons, the film is both a beautiful rendering of timeless rituals and a fascinating exploration of the Old Believers' turbulent history.
