East Coast responds to the textures, forms and elemental light play observed along a stretch of coastline in Happisburgh, Norfolk. It was first screened on BBC 2 television in the UK, where it was likened to the work of visionary film maker Pat O'Neil and his innovative multilayering of images using optical printing. This film creates similar effects by exposing each roll of film up to five times, using a Bolex 16mm camera. The film opens at Wells Next the Sea, and observes beach life in the gaps between the long row of beach huts. A fast film stock adds an intense painterly grain to the scene. The movement of waves drying on sun bleached sand are overlapped and rendered as kinetic abstractions. Each sequence is accompanied by a montage of natural sounds, which seek to suggest a musical equivalence of treatment, alongside the visuals.

Apirana Ngata, Member of Parliament for Eastern Māori, was keen for the museum group to visit the East Coast to obtain records of his people of Ngāti Porou. In March 1923 the expedition, which included Te Rangi Hiroa (Sir Peter Buck), James McDonald, Elsdon Best and Johannes Andersen, set out for the Ngata homestead at Waiomatatini which was to be their base. From Waiomatatini visits were made to Whareponga, Kahukura, Rangitukia, Te Araroa, Ruatoria and other parts of the district. MacDonald recorded on film traditional skills retained in the area for making fishnets and traps, methods of netting and catching fish, weaving, hand games and music making. Also shown is the digging and storing of kūmara and cooking food in a hāngī.

East Coast, West Coast, Holt and Smithson's first collaborative experiment with video, takes the form of a humorous bi-coastal art dialogue. Joined by their friends Joan Jonas and Peter Campus, Holt and Smithson improvise a conversation based on opposing - and stereotypical - positions of East Coast and West Coast art of the late 1960s. Holt assumes the role of an intellectual conceptual artist from New York, while Smithson plays the laid back Californian driven by feelings and instinct. Their deadpan exchange ironically lays bare the limitations and contradictions of both sides in the debate.

The hourly Southern service to Ashford (Kent) nowadays starts at Brighton, running fast to Eastbourne stopping only at Lewes and Polegate. At Eastbourne the 2 –car class 171 diesel multiple unit reverses before proceeding along the coast to Hastings calling at Bexhill and St Leonards Warrior Square. Our train then continues beneath the semaphore signals towards Ore where the third rail runs out. From here we run fast along the single line to the ancient town of Rye. Now we head across Romney Marsh, the flat landscape giving the line its name. After the unstaffed halt at Appledore, situated roughly one mile from the village, our train calls at one of the staggered platforms of Ham Street Station followed by the terminus at Ashford International.
