Four actors find themselves trapped in the belly of a literary monster. As they ponder the irony of their fate they recount a story of Moby Dick, sparkling with their own fantastical flourishes. The novel’s epic examination of good, evil, fate and obsession is lost on them. And then, mysteriously, found on them again. Will Ahab’s thirst for revenge be unhinged by the well-meaning but staggeringly inept attentions of his crew? Now that he has found true love, is Ishmael still fated to be the sole survivor of the Pequod? How does a mermaid figurehead make babies? Will the cameo appearance by legendary actor Awesome Whales scupper everything? And how do you make a whale throw up?

Guy Ben-Ner, one of Israel's foremost video artists, gained international recognition with a series of low-tech films, starring his family in absurdist settings carved out of their intimate spaces and their everyday surroundings. Many of his videos are inspired by screenplays for films, folktales and novels. Analyzing these literary and cinematographic passages allows him to exploit the conventions of film narrative: how to tell a story, captivate an audience through a tale, sustain a degree of tension and entertainment, and so on. At the same time, he corrupts the magic of fiction by openly showing us the entrails of everything he records, without worrying about revealing the tricks of the trade. A large part of his filmic oeuvre features a conglomeration of cinematic and literary references which the artist quotes, adapts or interprets. Ben-Ner self-referentially links the great themes and their literary, cinematic and artistic realization.

Moby Dick is a film that tells the story of an impossible quest amidst the uncertain cityscapes of post-industrial Barcelona. Slippery ways of life appear and disappear, bringing us into contact with some evasive characters. Characters who trade in scrap, steal, gamble, and hang around jails, disused factories and fairgrounds. Characters who have enough time on their hands to pose for a long while in front of a pinhole camera, but are incapable of being still, so their image is always blurred.

Moby Dick is an unfinished film by Orson Welles, filmed in 1971. It is not to be confused with the incomplete (and now lost) 1955 film Welles made of his meta-play Moby Dick—Rehearsed, or with Moby Dick (1956 film), in which Welles played a supporting role. The film consists of readings by Welles from the book Moby Dick, shot against a blue background with various optical illusions to give the impression of being at sea. It was made during a break in the filming of The Other Side of the Wind. There is some ambiguity about what Welles intended to do with the footage, and how he was going to compile it. It remained unedited in his lifetime.

In a timely precursor, this 40 minute talk sees Alexander Kluge and Joseph Vogl return to their customary roles. Kluge feigns the curious lay reader. He defers to the professional diviner of high and popular culture, Vogl. Together they make a sort of Dante and Vergil team, undaunted by the hellish difficulties in their pursuit of meaning and complexity. And these are the questions they ask themselves: Moby Dick - Ahab. Who are they? Godzilla. How does it compare to MB? What is monstrous, what is monstrosity?

Laurie Anderson wrote in the program notes that the genesis of her new show, Songs and Stories from Moby Dick, was a proposed series about classic books for high school students. From this she created a multi-media piece based on Herman Melville's Moby Dick. In the production, Anderson emphasized Melville's writing (rambling sentences, lyrical poems, re-configured Biblical references, lapses of iambic pentameter) and narrative style (constant shifting of character voice) thereby revealing an epic tragedy worth rediscovery. Filmed performance from McFarlin Auditorium in Dallas, TX. Sony Digital Tape > DVD Recorder > DVD Shrink

In the middle of the night on February 11, 1823, the seafaring career of Captain George Pollard, Jr. came to a dramatic end in the remote northwestern Hawaiian Islands. Having survived the tragic events of the Essex, one of the world’s most infamous seafaring disasters, and the true life events that inspired Herman Melville’s novel Moby Dick, Pollard optimistically set sail for the Pacific once again in the whaleship Two Brothers, believing with all his heart “that it was an old adage that the lightning never struck in the same place twice.” In this case it did, and Pollard’s promising career as a whaling captain came to a tragic end on an uncharted reef in the most remote archipelago on earth, and what is now Papahānaumokuākea Marine National Monument. In 2008, a team of NOAA maritime archaeologists discovered the first clues of the whaleship Two Brothers and began to unlock the mystery of the only Nantucket whaleship ever found on the sea floor.
