In the summer of 2022, the intricate quarantine policy in China compelled me to forgo the plans to return home. Departing from the East Coast of the United States, where I resided, I headed to San Francisco—the closest point on the other side of the Pacific from my homeland, tracing a potential sense of belonging. The essayistic film Coast to Coast (Preamble) oscillates between personal encounters, remnants of the past, and several proxies, examining the ambiguous temporality on the coast and my own condition of being inbetween during that period. It is the prelude of a long-term project Coast to Coast, which will be divided into several chapters to address subjects, including the oceanic epistemology from ancestors, the image(ry) of the vessel, and the historical legacy of optical navigational devices along the Chinese coast.

An internationally-notorious criminal scientist returns to the US to sell his latest invention, a disintegrating gas, to a foreign power. When he arrives, however, he is spotted by a young Coast Guard man, whom he kills - and thus earns the enmity of the entire US Coast Guard, but especially the murdered Guardsman's older brother who, together with his reporter-girlfriend and her comical photographer, vigorously sets to tracking him down and interfering with his plans to develop the city-melting gas in quantity. I took a few weeks to drive solo up the coast of Oregon at the end of last year. Every time I immerse myself into one of these landscapes so many different thoughts and emotions are brought to the surface, so I thought this time that I would record them. I love working with old tape recordings so I made some of my own.

A crew of young, amateur surfers put their lives on hold to surf at all 14 coastal counties in California, in only 14 days. On a shoestring budget, they bought an RV on the Internet for only $1,000 and planned the trip of a lifetime. They are starting their journey at the Oregon border and working their way down the coast to the Mexican border. Besides surfing an array of California beaches, they will also be trying new and exciting activities they discover along the way. This surf trip highlights the positive powers that surfing offers and shows how much fun surfing is at any skill level.
