24 Hours of Le Mans Review 1994
Titre original: 24 Hours of Le Mans Review 1994 ( Film )
The 1994 running of Le Mans confounded the nay-sayers by supplying excitement by the bucketload. The demise of the World Sportscar championship after the 1992 season saw a mass exodus of manufacturers to Formula One, leaving a grid shorn of much of the exotic machinery. The lack of Mercedes-Sauber, Peugeot and others might have seemed grim at the time but on reflection the return of the GT class prompted Le Mans to rediscover its roots – and created the environment for some legendary races. In the official review of the 1994 event we see Toyota and Porsche unwilling (or perhaps unable) to completely give up on their magnificent Group C beats. Utilising obscure loopholes in the rules Porsche had two 962s reclassified as GT1 cars while Toyota entered theirs under the new LMP1 category.
24 Hours of Le Mans Review 1996
Titre original: 24 Hours of Le Mans Review 1996 ( Film )
No fewer than nine manufacturers turned out cars for the 64th running of the world’s most prestigious endurance event. With a full 48 car grid, glorious sunshine and frisson of controversy the stage was set for a classic Le Mans year. Qualifying showed Porsche’s new GT1 works machines were going to be formidable contenders for the overall win but Joest Racing’s cleverly packaged TWR-Porsche WSC95 not only had a handy turn of speed but were efficient on fuel and tyres too. An exciting chase developed as the privateer Joest team took on the mighty Stuttgart factory and the dogfight kept the crowds enthralled through the night and into the final laps. With 48 cars on the grid there was interest throughout the field. Porsche’s switch to the GT1 class meant McLaren’s mighty F1s were hard put upon to repeat their sensational 1995 debut success but they were well in the hunt.
24 Hours of Le Mans Review 1997
Titre original: 24 Hours of Le Mans Review 1997 ( Film )
Blazing temperatures and blazing cars. The 1997 24 Hours of Le Mans was a sensational event from start to finish. Porsche turned up with revamped 911 GT1s, eager to take the overall win after losing out to Joest Racing’s TWR-Porsche prototype in ’96. Joest were out to repeat their surprise win from the previous year and write another chapter in the long history of the world’s most prestigious endurance event. Another TWR machine seemed to be in contention for the overall win during pre-qualifying - the elegant Nissan R390 GT1 – race day proved tough for the virtually untried trio of black and red machines. Panoz debuted their ‘throwback’ front-engined Esperante GTR-1 racer to add a throaty V8 rumble to the internal combustion orchestra. Sadly the three entered failed to last the distance, one bursting into flames on the Mulsanne Straight.
24 Hours of Le Mans Review 1998
Titre original: 24 Hours of Le Mans Review 1998 ( Film )
Porsche, Mercedes, Toyota and Nissan made the GT1 class the most exciting it had been for several years as the big manufacturers vied for supremacy. Mercedes’ return was a welcome one, given the success of the Mercedes Sauber C9s of the late ‘80s. The impressive looking V8 powered CLK-LM certainly impressed in testing but how would the ‘Silver Arrows’ cope with the rigours of a 24 hour race? Toyota too had a brand new machine; the German built TS020 GT-One. Phenomenally fast, the question was whether the three car team could avoid Toyota’s traditional Le Mans curse. Porsche stuck with their updated and powerful GT1s and Nissan’s R390 collaboration with TWR had matured into a reliable and quick package – the fight was on for class and overall honours! With Ferrari, BMW, Panoz, Courage, Chrysler and McLaren also represented there was masses of action all through the field to keep the fans interested.
24 Hours of Le Mans Review 1999
Titre original: 24 Hours of Le Mans Review 1999 ( Film )
Le Mans saw the overdue demise of the GT1 class in 1999, with cars like Toyota’s GT-One TS020 now more appropriately categorised as prototypes. Newcomers Audi entered two works supported teams in the form of Audi Sport Team Joest and Audi Sport UK – the start of a long and fruitful association with the race for the German manufacturer. As one German sportscar manufacturer arrived another departed: Porsche followed up their 1998 triumph by taking a break from Le Mans which was to last until 2014. With Audi, BMW, Mercedes-Benz, Nissan, Panoz and Toyota there was no shortage of quality in the field and fans eagerly anticipated a mighty tussle for the top spot. 1999 will forever be remembered for one of the most shocking moments of Le Mans history as Mercedes-Benz driver Peter Dumbreck found the take-off speed of his CLR on the Mulsanne Straight – fortunately with no serious injuries.
