For the first time in human history, the world has come together with a common goal to protect nature. One of the hot-button components of the GBF is the “30×30” conservation target, which is draft target 3. This target calls for 30% of the earth’s land and sea to be conserved through the establishment of protected areas (PAs) and other area-based conservation measures (OECMs). Thirty-by-thirty (30×30) refers to efforts by the global community to conserve 30% of terrestrial and marine habitat by 2030. The movement started with international calls for setting aside portions of the globe as protected, and became official policy in the U.S. in 2021. Global interest and ambition toward achieving protection and conservation of at least 30 percent of the planet by 2030 will require an unprecedented level of innovation, collaboration, and commitment across a broad spectrum of stakeholders.
